We ask the big questions about this place. Where are we? Where does our water come from? Where does our water go? What is soil made of? Where does our food come from? Where does our waste go? What is our role in the eco system? There are lots of fun projects to guide the answering of these questions. We’ll be calculating slope, analyzing soil, harvesting, processing, cooking, tending and planting food, using a compass, mimicking flash floods, observing and interacting with natural systems, and so much more! I’ll be drawing on Matt Power’s K-12 Permaculture Student curriculum, Kaci Rae Christopher’s School Garden Curriculum, local indigenous knowledge, and my own love of Waldorf, seasonality, and holidays.

Thursdays 10-2, Yucca Valley

Social Studies, Language Arts

In this hands-on Social Studies and story telling class, we’ll be exploring early civilizations across the planet as well as in our very own Morongo Basin. We’ll learn about the earliest nomads and the beginning of agriculture, and explore early civilizations in the Middle East, India, Africa, and China. We’ll hear origin stories, folk tales and legends from these cultures as well as the local Cahuilla and Maarrênga’yam people. We’ll prepare and taste traditional foods, and try our hands at ancient technologies such as weaving and threshing wheat. We might even put on a play of an Anansi the spider story.

Geared towards 4rd grade, but open to other levels. CCCC 4rd grade standards that we’ll focus on are continuity and change in history, understanding cultures of long ago and the recent past, speaking and listening, communication & vocabulary. -I strongly believe that our human brains are wired to learn best through stories and through play. I will not be sending your child back with worksheets.
